REASONS TO SMILE

The French love to smile (yes, it’s true!). In Fact, it was French journalist Franklin Loufrani who initiated the Smiley icon in 1972 to highlight good news stories in the columns of France Soir newspaper. Around the same time, another budding journalist was busy spreading waves of joy across the French Riviera using his own unconventional methods: pair after pair of groovy swim trunks!

Ever since the early 70s, Vilebrequin and Smiley have made sunshine and positive energy their manifesto, whether it be through a playful print or a well-placed emoticon. Before the collector’s edition trunks from our 50th anniversary collection even had a chance to dry, Vilebrequin jumped at the invitation to keep the beach party going into 2022.
