Linen is one of the oldest textile fibers in the world. Even in ancient Egypt, it was nicknamed "woven moonlight" for its exceptional fineness.
This noble plant draws its strength from the earth and the sun, offering a natural fiber with unparalleled properties.

FROM THE EARTH
TO THE THREAD

At Vilebrequin, linen undergoes a demanding process, comprised of numerous selection and processing stages, ensuring that only the long, naturally stronger fibers are retained. This exacting standard results in a stronger, more durable, and superior quality linen. Creating a linen garment is an art of patience, following a meticulous path.

1. FLAX SEED

It all begins with the seed, sown in the spring in rich, well-prepared soil.

2. GROWTH

Nature takes its course for about 100 days until the plant reaches a height of around 1.20 m, with 80 to 100 leaves.

3. RETTING

Unlike other plants, flax is never cut; it is pulled from the ground to preserve the full length of the fiber. The stalks are pulled up and left to dry, then retted in the open field, under the effect of rain, sun and micro-organisms. Retting is a key stage: it separates the fiber (the fibre flax) from the wood (the woody part called shives).

4. SCUTCHING

A mechanical operation that breaks and removes the woody parts to extract the raw fibers.

5. COMBING

Through several meticulous steps, the fibers are sorted and aligned to retain only the longest. This results in a homogeneous ribbon of perfectly parallel fibers, guaranteeing a more uniform and higher quality yarn.

6 AND 7. FIRST-PASS AND FINISHING SLIVER

The sliver is then stretched in several passes to progressively thin the material. This step helps to even out the thickness and strengthen the cohesion of the fibers, ensuring a more precise and stronger yarn before spinning.

8. RAW WICK PREPARATION

The ribbon is then lightly twisted to form a raw strand. This slight twist prepares the material for spinning while maintaining a supple and airy feel.

9. BLEACHING

Depending on the desired result, the hair can be bleached. This process lightens the fiber to obtain a more neutral shade and facilitates subsequent dyeing steps.

10. LINEN THREAD

The strand is finally stretched and twisted to form a regular and strong linen thread. Ready to be woven or knitted, it marks the culmination of the fiber transformation process.

11. WEAVING & FINISHING

The yarn is woven on machines and then passed through a finishing machine to soften the fabric for ultimate comfort.
