To celebrate a tradition now known and admired around the world, Día de Muertos, Vilebrequin draws inspiration from the mythical creatures that, within the imagination of this tradition, guide souls on their journey to the afterlife, transforming marine animals into fantastical beings.
For this creation, Vilebrequin brings its signature colorful spirit and fascination with the marine world into the universe of alebrijes. The result is an imaginative composition in which a pufferfish, an octopus, a hammerhead shark, and a manta ray leave behind their familiar forms to become extraordinary creatures.Alebrijes are among the most emblematic expressions of Mexican folk art. These imaginative handcrafted figures combine elements from different animals with vibrant colors, intricate shapes, and detailed patterns. Within the traditions and imagery surrounding Día de Muertos, they are associated with protective beings and spiritual guides, believed to accompany souls on their journey to the afterlife.
It is precisely this ability to transform reality through imagination that connects alebrijes with the world of Vilebrequin. Since its origins, the Maison has made color, creativity, and artisanal savoir-faire essential elements of its identity. This encounter with a deeply rooted Mexican tradition gives rise to a contemporary interpretation that celebrates both the cultural richness of Mexico and the playful spirit of the brand.
Set against a blue background, the design comes to life through shades of pink and fluorescent yellow, creating a vibrant contrast that evokes both the intense palette of alebrijes and Vilebrequin’s sun-drenched, marine universe. Intricate patterns cover each creature, transforming the ocean into a fantastical setting where the real and the imaginary meet. This creation pays tribute to a tradition deeply rooted in Mexican culture while bringing it into the language of Vilebrequin: a universe where color, the ocean, and imagination know no boundaries.
