LOVE AND SEA AIR
Are they really enough to live on? Fred Prysquel sure thought so! To get the girl of his dreams, he bet everything on a swimsuit. Or rather a swim short. Influenced by his time abroad, they were like nothing the French Riviera had ever seen before.
Moving with the ease of board shorts popular with Californian surfers, and wowing with their bright motifs borrowed from African wax fabrics he’d come found on his travels, they had the desired effect. That summer of 1971, Fred caught Yvette’s eye, grabbing the attention of his friends and a few icons along the way. The couple got together, and Vilebrequin was born.

A STAR IS BORN: SAINT-TROPEZ, 1971
It was the place to be. And be free. The center of the new world. Provence’s once-sleepy fishing village had earned its reputation as a hotspot some years back. Come summer, the beautiful people flocked to the jewel of the French Riviera.

But the 70s brought with them a new wave of liberation. It was here, in the thick of the fun, glamour, and color of 1971, that two young dreamers were about to change the face of the modern swimwear. Talk about a revolution.
80s: TIDE IS HIGH
Pop, color, and prints you could see from space: What didn’t Vilebrequin love about the 80s? Spandex, perhaps. By now, the original swim short was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and like any star worth their salt, your favorite sea creatures went all out.

Shrimp wore cocktail dresses (yes, there were shoulder pads), fish got us into the New Wave, the Playboy bunny now had a rival: sea turtles. Summer days were spent glued to your Walkman, your Rubik’s Cube, and your neon Vilebrequin trunks. Even your cocktails had beach umbrellas. Chic, no?
90s: BATHING INSTINCT
Vilebrequin, guilty of seduction? Tropical flowers and fancy feathers were hardly criminal in the 90s. Turtles ruled the runways in Milan, Paris, the Maldives, Tahiti… Anywhere there was an airport runway and an XXL hotel pool. Starfish were so famous they had their own publicist, complete with the latest cell phone: “Allô, oui?!”

Vilebrequin’s first ever father & son collections gave dads a real excuse to act like kids. If you surfed in Palm Beach, spent your weekends in an RV, or tuned into Baywatch regularly, you appreciated a well-cut swim trunk. And Vilebrequin was, well, cult.
00s: WIDENING THE NET
With three decades of innovation under its belt, Vilebrequin wasn’t about to slow down. Squids got their tentacles on the inkjet printer. Toucans updated their profile pics. Sharks were busy inventing fin tech. The rest of us had just discovered Facebook.
From Ibiza to Saint-Tropez (still the place to be), marine life went wild for nightlife. Remember foam parties? Turtles got matching tattoos in Cabo. Lucky for you, tracksuits and sunnies weren’t the only uniform: Women and men could finally coordinate their swimsuits. Thanks to Vilebrequin, of course!
10s: SOLAR POWERED
Green living has been in Vilebrequin’s roots since the 70s. Where else can you find swim shorts you can keep for life? As the world got to work on a more sustainable tomorrow, the House got creative with a new generation of eco-friendly textiles.
Turtles recycled themselves as hypnotists, flamingos discovered there’s more to life than pink, fish went zero waste. Vilebrequin’s octopus became an overnight influencer. From Instagram royalty to actual royalty, the original swim trunk charmed everybody. And every body. We’ve never had more energy than at 50.
